U. S. Mama Knows Worst —Adler Points to Neurotics
Domineering Mothers Blamed for Crop of Unsocial Delinquents
ST. LOUIS, March 9 (AP).—Dr. Alfred Adler today blamed "monopolizing mamas" for the nation's crop of young neurotics and delinquents.
The Viennese physician and psychologist said many modern mothers were assuming too much control over the interests of their children, with the result their offspring were dependent, introverted and selfish.
"They are more interested in themselves than others," he asserted. "They suffer from mental confusion, phobias, foolish ideas. They have inferiority complexes, which involve not keing able to solve social problems.
"Often such young men have derived every thought from their mothers and will make no move unless mother tells them to do so."
Dr. Adler recommended a school for parents, but said many parents would refuse to admit their culpability in domineering their children's lives. He emphasized the need of developing the child's social interest and in aiding him to find "the inner imperative that makes him what he is."
