ADOLESCENT NEEDS SOCIAL INTEREST STATES DR. ADLER

Eminent Psychologist Talks On Child Guidance Before Capacity Audience

Our duty towards children should be to bring them up witr the right degree of social interest, stated Dr. Alfred Adler, eminent educator, psychologist and physician, Monday night before an audience that completely filled the large auditorium of the Hempstead High School. This can be done with the cooperation of schools and teachers, he added, and would thereby make the school the centre of social progress of mankind.

In his talk on psychological guidance Dr. Adler advised his listeners to study the style or "pattern" of the problem child and discover what had been the cause. Inheritance and environment have little emphasis, he pointed out, and said that too much indulgence on the mother's part gives the child the desire to be the centre of the picture at all times. This may later lead the child to do abnormal things in order to continue to attract attention.

Dr. Adler gave three rules for the promotion of social interest: by teaching children how to behave towards one another, encouraging friendship, comradeship, interest in family life, community life and in the human race; by instilling an ability for cooperation, a usefulness to the community and an occupation; and by interesting them in the future of mankind.

Dr. Theodore V. Moldenke in charge of the Hempstead Child Guidance Clinic in cooperation with the Junior High School, introduced the speaker. They were accompanied to the platform by Dr. William A. Gore, superintendent of schools. Prior to the lecture several selections were given by the high school band, under the direction of Miss Imogene Boyle.

After the lecture Mrs. Russel G. Booth, who was instrumental in bringing Dr. Adler to Hempstead, gave an informal reception for him at her home on Manor avenue. Assisting Mrs. Booth were Mrs. William A. Gore and Mrs. Kenneth B. Van de Water, presiding at the tea tables; Mrs. A. G. Decatur, Mrs. H. Louis Naisawald, Mrs. J. Burtin Back, Mrs. C. E. L. Clark and Mrs. Theodore Moldenke.
