Savant Says Independence In U.S. Keeps Down Insanity

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 12 — (AP)—Dr. Alfred Adler, Vienna psychologist and one-time associate of Freud, believes American independence and efficiency will keep insanity down in this country.

The world-renowned savant expressed this opinion last night in an address here.

Americans want to do things themselves, and still react to the pioneer instincts of their forebears, said Dr. Adler. Europeans, on the contrary, are dependent on others. European dictators are a result.

Dr. Adler said, "The willingness of people to have things done for them breeds insanity. Insanity is probably on the increase over there."

Poor psychological education is the cause of world ills he declared. Failure to understand two types of children—the potential neurotic and the potential delinquent—causes them to grow up as criminals, insane, drunks, or just ordinary misfits.

He said:

The next step in the forward evolution of mankind will be teachers with the proper psychological education to recognize these classes of children and cure their weaknesses before adulthood.
