# DR. ADLER CALLS MARRIAGE 'TASK' LASTING LIFETIME

"Marriage is a task for which one should be prepared and trained from childhood," declared Dr. Alfred Adler, professor of medical psychology at Long Island College of Medicine, at the Academy of Music last night. "Instead of considering marriage as an end in itself, it should be looked upon as a lifelong task, founded upon the mutual devotion of two persons of opposite sexes."

The author of numerous psychology texts offered his conception of the requisites necessary for a successful marriage.

**'Should Have Many Friends'**

"First of all, the prospective partners must be mutually attractive mentally and physically, so that the desire to perpetuate these admirable qualities in children will predominate," declared the psychologist.

"Secondly, each should have many friends, for the man or woman who is friendless has proven himself unable to co-operate with others, and how can marriage succeed without complete co-operation?"

"Material preparedness for the task of marriage" Dr. Adler gave as his third requisite. "A man must have a job and the ability to stick to it." In this way he shows that he has learned to contribute his interests and efforts over a long period of time, the speaker said.

"Last but not least, each partner must be more interested in the other than in himself; must be able to lose his own selfish desires in the interests of the other."
